K Individual artists (artist monographs)

K Individual artists

  • Shelving is alphabetical by artist name (last name or abbreviation), not separated by nation, epoch, or art form.
  • Artists with the same name or identical abbreviations are differentiated from each other through the use of additional guide numbers (alphabetical grouping or guide number designation according to first name wherever possible).
  • Publications by two artists with different last names are cataloged under the name of the first author/artist.
  • Artist families and their members are grouped under the first representative of the family.
  • Anonymous artists or artists with provisional names, monogrammists (artists known by their initials, year, place, etc.) are alphabetically cataloged under K Anony (masters known by year generally within their respective group by ascending year) and placed in the artist alphabet at the appropriate place under the collective term "Anony"; initials are added in the 3rd row instead of a guide number as an additional order criterion, initials or M+ year, e.g. Master E.S.: “K Anony ES,” Master of the Housebook: “K Anony Hausb,” Master L. Cz.: “K Anony LCZ,” or Masters from 1515: “K Anony M1515.”
  • The following key is assigned to artists for whom a larger amount of literature is available for better subdivision and orientation:
    • A: Personal bibliographies
    • B: Written sources, self-testimonies, e.g. letters, diaries, archives, autobiographies, literary and scientific works, works published by the artist themselves, etc. e.g. engraving sequences, Dürer's Four Books of Human Proportion..., Doré's illustrated Bible, etc.
    • C: Oeuvre catalogs, catalogs of works (also of individual groups of works), exhibition catalogs D Pure works of illustration, illustrated books, pictorial portfolios E Biographies, general descriptions, documents on life and work, collective works, commemorative publications, etc.
    • F: Areas of work of the artist as architect, painter, sculptor, graphic artist, writer, theorist, etc. For artists who were active in all 3 art genres and for whom larger amounts of literature are available, subdivisions are made within F: F1: Architecture, F2: Sculpture, F3: Painting/graphic art (cf. e.g. Michelangelo)G Individual questions, individual works
    • H: Relationships with other persons, impact of the person and the work
